Totem FAQ
Totems use GNSS to determine their locations, and then leverage the Unity Mesh Network™ to communicate that location to each other without any cell service, wifi, or bluetooth. Our software uses that data to determine the directional heading of your friends, and guides you in their direction using a ring of pretty lights.
Totem Compass is designed for the outdoors and works best at festivals, campsites and open spaces. Buildings, metal structures and multiple floors can interfere with its satellite connection, making it harder to accurately track your friends indoors.
Totem shows the direction of your bonded friends, but it can't tell whether they're above or below you, so it won't be able to tell you which floor they're are on.
Pairing your Totem Compass with the Totem Compass App can help improve functionality in some indoor environments, but for the best experience, we recommend using Totem outdoors.
What if my group is larger than 9 people?
You can Bond with more than eight friends using the Totem Compass App!
Without the app, your Totem Compass can only Bond with four others - but those Bonds don’t happen in a closed circle. If you are smart about how your group spreads their Bonds around, you can easily make sure that everyone stays connected.
Can I see the distance of my friend?
When you are within 100 meters from your friend, their Bond Light on your Totem will begin to expand, telling you that they are close by. As you get closer, their light gets larger and larger until you re-unite once again.

Your Totem is built for outdoor events, so no need to worry about rain, sweat, or humidity. Just don’t go swimming with it - they are not designed to be submerged in water or subjected to splashing without a waterproof case.
The Totem Compass is designed with your safety - and consent - in mind. Every Totem Compass contains a secure “key” that ensures people can only track you if you choose to Bond with them.
Totems use a secure, two-way Bonding process that requires mutual consent from both people simultaneously. Totems can only be bonded when they are right next to each other, and you can delete someone at any time using Peer Management Mode.
Functions like these, layered on top of the Totems’ secure keys, make it nearly impossible for anyone to track you without your consent or knowledge.
This one’s easy - simply turn your Totem Compass off!
The Totem Compass does not use haptic feedback (vibration). Vibration is hard to sense when you're at an event or in a crowd, so we made the Totem communicate solely through light and colour.
Yes! The Totem Compass uses a global constellation of satellites to determine its location, meaning that your Totem will work beautifully anywhere in the world (as long as you have a clear view of the sky). Their communication protocol broadcasts on 2.4GHz, one of the only frequencies legal in 100% of countries worldwide.
